The Model:  Maserati introduced the Merak in 1972, to expand the companies model range, as well as feature their new four-cam V-6.  This new V-6 engine was designed for the then current owner Citroën, and for Maserati to compete within the market trend of smaller displacement engines. The V-6 was also to be used in Citroens flagship MS model. Early Meraks and all other Maseratis shared many Citroën designed engineering features during this time. In 1977 Maserati sold to De Tomaso, and the Merak received several updates. The Bora was dropped and the Merak SS 3.0L V-6 received increased output 190 hp (220 hp rest of world), and the phasing out of the Citroen hydraulic system for a more traditional set up.Power from the V-6 engine was increased to 190 hp and a revised timing chain system improved reliability.  Later versions (314) of the Merak SS featured the more attractive dash from its no-longer-in-production bigger brother, the Bora. In its production run, 1972 to 1983, a total of 1,830 Merak variations were built, of which about 970 were the Merak SS. Era market competitors to the Merak SS were the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, Lamborghini Urraco, and Porsche 911.

The Car: This unique Merak SS is a very original survivor example with only 14,145 miles. One of about 150 produced in 1980. The factory Rosso Fuoco retains a remarkable finish and luster, for a 36 year old. Body and chassis is clean. The all original interior is very clean with working gauges, switches and original Blaupunkt Radio. Complete original tool kit, owners manual, parts catalog, original window sticker included, and many service receipts.  Certificate of Origin from Maserati (requested). This vehicle is 1 of 314 Merak SS produced with the very attractive Bora style interior dash. Recent extensive service work includes valve adjustment, reconditioned carburetors, new fuel hoses, new oil cooler hoses, upgraded new Euro exhaust manifolds, upgraded power window gear, and several other preservation work performed. A great example of a preserved Merak SS.
