Around the World in a Beetle, Twice: 1961 & 1996

Reddit user /u/Forloveandabeetle posted about his grandparent's adventures in a Beetle, yesterday.

The story:

In 1961 and 1996, his grandparents traveled on a budget of $2/day (Inflation: $46). $1 for expenses and another $1 for gas. Before leaving, Ivan (the grandfather) took a crash course on VW Beetle repair.

In all, their journey took them to England via France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India (concluding at Calcutta).

The pictures they took show how much the world, and cars, have changed. It's a great look back at the Beetle, and a heartwarming story, to boot.

They've published a book detailing their adventures, as well: http://www.forloveandabeetle.com
